Circular Economy Model for Organic Waste in Tourist Areas

Fundación Puntacana (FGPC) signed an agreement with the Inter-American Development Bank's Innovation Lab (IDB Lab) to implement the project "Circular Economy Model for Organic Waste in Tourist Areas", ATN/ME-18335-DR

Food waste is a major problem. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), each year one third of all food produced for human consumption is lost or wasted, amounting to 1.3 billion tons. This represents an estimated economic value of US $936 billion, not including environmental and social costs.

Management of Organic Waste from Pig Farmer

Organic waste is waste of plant, business, industrial, or animal origin produced in household or commercial settings.

When organic waste is properly managed, it represents an opportunity to create a closed-loop system in favor of sustainability with a lower environmental impact.

Lower Environmental Impact

Organic waste represents an opportunity to create a closed-loop system in favor of sustainability.

Transforming Food Scraps

With recovered food scraps, it will be possible to produce feed for animals.

Reduces the Effects of Climate Change

Organic waste can be managed in a way that produces benefits, mitigating the effects of climate change

Safe Feed Production for Pig

The success of any livestock operation, regardless of its size or species, will depend on managing the fundamentals of animal production, which are:

  • Selection and improvement (which animals I breed)
  • Reproduction (how I breed them)
  • Nutrition (how they are properly fed)
  • Health (how to keep them healthy)
  • Management (how, when, where, and why to raise them)

"With proper sorting of organic waste, the risks of environmental contamination are reduced."

Discarded organic waste

Produces greenhouse gases.

When the soil is heated by the sun,

the gases retain energy from the soil, emitting carbon dioxide, methane, and other gases.

These gases contribute

to climate change and to water pollution around the world.
