CONSERVATION OF THE RHINOCEROS IGUANA

The rhinoceros iguana (Cyclura cornuta) is an endemic species of the island of Hispaniola, known for its imposing appearance, with a prominent protuberance on its snout, similar to a horn, which gives it its name. This iguana species is considered endangered due to habitat loss, illegal hunting, and competition with invasive species for natural resources. Its population has declined drastically, and it is currently in a critical situation, with fewer than 1,000 individuals in the wild.

Fundación Puntacana's Rhinoceros Iguana Conservation Program focuses on preserving this species through a comprehensive approach that includes population monitoring, protection of natural habitats, and the reintroduction of iguanas in safe areas.

The program works in collaboration with various local and international organizations to improve the iguana's living conditions and restore its natural habitat. In addition, education and awareness programs are carried out in nearby communities, promoting local participation in conservation. Thanks to these efforts, Fundación Puntacana has been fundamental in protecting this species and in establishing protected areas that ensure its future survival.
