Protecting the Ridgway’s Hawk
The Puntacana Ecological Foundation has teamed with The Peregrine Fund over the since 2009 to protect and repopulate the highly endangered Ridgway’s Hawk (Buteo ridgwayi) in Punta Cana. With a total population of just 300 remaining individuals in the wild, the Ridgway’s Hawk is highly threatened with extinction due to habitat loss and human persecution.
Hawk reintroductions begin with monitoring of adult nest sites in Los Haitises National Park, after which juvenile hawks are captured and reintroduced in Punta Cana through a scientifically proven “hacking” methodology. Hawks are fitted with radio collars and tags so they can be monitored using radio telemetry.
