Marine Conservation Operations Intern
Supervisor: Marine Conservation Operations Coordinator (EbA)
I. Basic mission of the position:
Support the coordinator to achieve compliance with the objectives, plans and programs for coral conservation and restoration and the EbA project, including but not limited to the supervision and performance of underwater coral nurseries, the implementation of transplant programs according to the established guidelines and monitoring of transplant survival levels according to established protocols.
II. Main duties and responsibilities:
- Follow up on maintenance, expansion, and replacement of underwater coral nurseries
- Locate new genotypes for incorporation into underwater and terrestrial coral nurseries.
- Support the coordinator in the supervision and establishment of new underwater coral nurseries in the Dominican Republic in coordination with the Dominican Coastal Restoration Consortium.
- Collaborate and monitor the contractors and volunteers in Punta Cana assigned by the coordinator.
- Carry out coral transplant programs from different nurseries and coral production areas to the reef
- Participate in specific transplant events like Coralmania (massive coral out-planting events)and other similar events.
- Support the coordinator with the scheduling and execution of all underwater seeding, transplanting and routine monitoring tasks.
- Monitor transplant survival levels according to established protocols.
- Periodically collect data on water quality (pH, O2, complete nitrate cycle, etc.) in the sea as needed by the project and established program
- Collaborate in the analysis and interpretation of data collected for the preparation of reports to EbA and technical reports for the scientific community.
- Caring for, maintaining, and ensuring the well-being of underwater species and the equipment and instruments assigned under their responsibility, by carrying out inventories and by meeting with the team of divers and captains (including but not limited to diving equipment, scientific instruments, ships, motors, anchors, tanks, and marine laboratory material).
- Assist in the installation of new marine laboratory equipment and other laboratory needs.
- Keep track of materials, tools, and assets related to your work area.
- Collaborate with the coordinator with registration of visitors to underwater transplants and nurseries.
- Together with the project coordinator, prepare a pre-project for independent research which will be under the charge of the internship.
- Carry out the implementation of independent research and data collection.
- Commit to complete your independent investigation and meet the deadline.
- Comply with the policies and procedures established by the company.
- Make monthly reports of progress and results of the areas of its competence
- Collaborate with the sea turtle monitoring project including participant statistics information.
- Support the coordinator with the activities of international visits, international academic groups, and awareness groups.
- Provide support to schools, courses, programs, visits, and students who are using the equipment, tanks, and resources of the marine laboratory.
- Attend microfragmentation activities when requested.
- Collaborate with the average technicians and boat captains in the work of coastal planning.
- Perform other tasks related and complementary to the position.
- Internal: Marine Innovation Center, Group coordinator, Navy Dock Tender, media technicians, administration of the Sustainability Center.
- External: Interns of the Coral Restoration Project, Dominican Consortium of Coastal Restauration, GIZ, Dominican Reef Network, Alliance of the Eastern Marine Sanctuary, The Nature Conservancy.
The selected person will be working under a full-time but variable work schedule established by the coordinator, which includes working hours outside normal hours, participating in night dives and other variables depending on the needs of the projects. The internship will begin in August 2022 with a duration of 6 months.
Competences:
- Education:
Being of legal age who is and can demonstrate vast interest in the conservation, protection and sustainable management of coastal marine resources (see Profile for additional data). - Experience:
- Have experience working in coastal systems of the Dominican Republic.
- This person must know how to swim and dive with a minimum of 10 additional dives to those required for Open Water.
- Having advanced diving certification and rescue certification is preferable.
- Have the ability to work exposed to non-ideal marine conditions, including but not limited to underwater currents, high waves, low visibility, and long hours of diving and continuous days of diving.
- To be able to work efficiently, solve problems, quickly adapt to unforeseen events and work independently with minimal supervision.
- Finish assigned work properly and with quality.
- Be upright and reliable, representing the best interest of the institution and the project.
- Duration:
- The internship duration is 6 months.
- The internship is full time and it is required to live in the project facilities.
- This position is not subject to the benefits received by the employees of the institution.
- Compensation and / or benefits:
- The Grupo Puntacana Foundation will provide the selected candidate with dormitory-style accommodation in its facilities with electricity and water 24 hours a day.
- Payment of a salary to cover your other needs (through EbA fund, depending of the internship offered)
- An office space for your work
- Six (6) days off per month (this internship does not include vacations).

Internship in Coral Microfragmentation Land-based Facility
Supervisor: Coral Scientific Coordinator
I. Basic mission of the position:
To cooperate actively with microfragmentation activities, production and coral maintenance on land-based nurseries at the Centre of Marine Innovation.
II. Main duties and responsibilities:
- Execute and monitor the maintenance, expansion, and replacement of terrestrial coral nurseries, including micro-fragmentation, sexual reproduction, or other techniques to be developed.
- Collaborate with the establishment of new terrestrial coral nurseries in the Dominican Republic in coordination with the Dominican Coastal Restoration Consortium.
- Collaborate with the monitoring of contractor personnel and volunteers in Punta Cana assigned to their cargo.
- Work in coordination with the operational area in the coral transplant programs from the different nurseries and coral production areas to the reef.
- Attend specific transplant events such as Coralmania and other similar events.
- Execute all tasks of terrestrial and laboratory production of corals including routine monitoring, documentation of techniques and levels of production and survival.
- Assist the coordinator with the analysis of the survival levels of the transplants according to the established protocols.
- Collect water quality data (pH, O2, complete nitrate cycle, etc.) in the production areas according to the established program.
- When requested, collaborate with the coordinator in the analysis and interpretation of the data collected for the preparation of EbA reports and technical reports for the scientific community.
- Care, maintain, and ensure the welfare of the species in propagation operations and the laboratory equipment and instruments, supporting the realization of inventories and meetings with the rest of the laboratory team, marine interns, divers, and captains (including, scientific instruments and marine laboratory material assigned to your charge).
- Support the coordinator with the supervision of the installation of new marine laboratory equipment and other needs of the laboratory.
- Keep a record of the materials, tools and assets related to your work area.
- Assist and collaborate with technical and advisory visits including but not limited to the Plant a Million Corals Foundation, The Nature Conservancy, and Seacore.
- Together with the project coordinator, prepare a preliminary project for the independent research that will be under the charge of the internship.

- Collaborate with the technical media and boat captains in the work of coastal planning.
- Collaborate with the sea turtle monitoring project including information on participant statistics.
- Perform other related and complementary tasks to the position.

One (1) bicycle for transportation within the property. Six (6) days off per month (this internship does not include vacations).
